What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a type of talking therapy which is built on the idea that there is a two way interaction between how we think, feel and act. Take a look at the diagram A to see how this works. Based on how we are thinking about a situation will effect how we feel about that situation and will then influence how we act. If we are viewing a situation in a helpful way, this works well.

However, if we are thinking in a negative or anxious way, this cycle can lead to something called a vicious cycle. This is when our feelings and behaviours start to justify our negative thinking, even if the way we are thinking is incorrect, unhelpful or highly negative.

Lets look at two examples to show that this works in action. One for low mood and one or anxiety:

Imagine someone with low self esteem that has the thought that they are “unlovable and that no one loves them”. This thought is obviously going to cause them to feel low. Due to this, they start people pleasing and always saying yes to everyone. This may help them in the short term as they feel they have done something for people to like them, but it also convinces them that the only reason people like them is because they always say yes to everyone and everything and that if they ever said no they would be rejected. Over time this strengthens the belief that “no one loves them for who they are”. See how this becomes a vicious cycle in diagram B.

Now lets see how this works for anxiety. Imagine someone who has frequent panic attacks where they have a worried thought about passing out. This causes them to feel scared and so they decide to leave the room they are in and go outside to get fresh air. In the short term this makes them feel better due to removing themself from a setting they felt anxious in and into a setting where they feel fresh air has prevented them from passing out. However, this validates the thought that they were in danger of passing out and the only reason they didn’t was because they went outside. However, they never get to see that they would have been fine if they had stayed. This can encourage the same thoughts, feelings and behaviours in various situations and becomes a vicious cycle as seen in diagram C.

CBT Therapy helps you to recognise if the way you are thinking and acting has you trapped in any vicious cycles and gives you the tools needed to break out of them. It does this by challenging your thinking and helping you see things from a different perspective. Once you find out what is causing you to be in a cycle and learn how to break out of it, most people see a long term reduction in their anxiety and low mood.

CBT has been shown in thousands and thousands of studies to be the most effective therapy for a wide range of mental health problems and is designed to be effective in the shortest time possible with many people recovering from their mental health problems within 12 sessions. CBT is also designed to help you become your own therapist, so that even after therapy ends, your progress does not. You will be equipped with all of the tools needed to tackle future problems and prevent relapse.
