What is Depression?
Depression is not just the occasional sad day here and there. Most people will have times when they feel low in response to difficult events. However for it to be counted as an episode of Depression, this low mood needs to have lasted at least two weeks.
Depression changes us in three major ways:
1) The way we physically and emotionally feel - For example you might feel: fatigue, lack motivation and have changes in appetite or sleep.
2) The way we act - For example: you might you procrastinate tasks (putting things off until later), do less around the house or stop your hobbies, or find you have socially withdrawn from family and friends.
3) The way we think - Depression causes us to have more negative thoughts. These can be about yourself, your situation, the world or people around you or it can be about having a negative view of the future. You may even start to have thoughts of death, suicidal thoughts, plans or attempts to end your life or harm yourself.
How is it treated?
Depression is highly treatable using Cognitive Behavioural therapy (CBT) and usually less than 16 sessions are required for most people.
Can I treat myself?
The simple answer is yes. This page has a series of free videos and tools designed to help you achieve this at home.
Although it is possible to treat Depression yourself, some people may require the help of a trained CBT therapist to guide them in this process.
How?
Work through the four self-help sections. Watch one video at a time and practice it for a week before moving onto the next.
For self-help to work you must have both understanding and practice:
Understanding: The first step is to understand what the root cause of your Depression is and how we respond to it. The second step is to change how we are acting as the actions we take to cope with our feelings might actually be the very thing causing our Depression to continue.
Practice: CBT therapy can offer you strategies but it is up to you to use them. They need to be repeated and practiced for them to work.
